Swedish massage

Why it’s called Swedish massage?

Swedish massage is based on the Western concepts of anatomy and physiology as opposed to energy work that is more common in Asian-style massage. It is the foundation for other types of Western massage, including sports massage, deep tissue massage and aromatherapy massage.

What happens during a Swedish massage?

We lubricate the skin with massage oil and performs various massage strokes. These movements warm up the muscle tissue, releasing tension and gradually breaking up muscle “knots” or adhered tissues, called adhesions. Swedish massage promotes relaxation, among other health benefits.

Before your first massage with Zizu, you will fill our consultation form, and speak about your health condition, problems, injuries or other conditions that we should know. Things you would want tell us include areas of tightness or pain, allergies, and conditions like pregnancy. You can also tell us up front if you have a preference for light or firm pressure.

It’s best not to get a massage if you are ill.

After the consultation, we instruct you how to lie on the table — face up or face down, and underneath the sheet or towel — and then leaves the room. We will knock or ask if you are ready before entering.

The nudity factor

During a Swedish massage you are almost nude underneath a towel or sheet. We ask you to take off all your clothes except your underwear. We uncover only the part of the body we am working on, a technique called draping.

You usually start by laying face up. We generally start by works your head and face without using oil. After that we continue your massage on your feet, front of legs, arms using various massage strokes that include effleurage, kneading, friction, stretching and tapping. When done with the front side, the therapist holds the sheet or towel up and looks away while you turn over onto your back and scoot down; then we quickly cover you again. Then we massage the back of each leg, buttocks, and generally we finish with your back.

Sometimes work has been done in a different order. If you only have 60 minutes, you can also ask us to spend more time on a certain area. If the pressure is too light or too firm, you should speak up and ask the therapist to adjust it. Swedish massage usually includes some deeper work on areas of specific muscle tension, but if you truly want deeper, more intensive work and firmer pressure, book a deep tissue massage.

Deep tissue massage

Zizu deep tissue massage uses firm pressure and slow strokes to reach deeper layers of muscle and fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles). It’s used for chronic aches and pain and contracted areas such as a stiff neck and upper back, low back pain, leg muscle tightness, and sore shoulders.

How Does It Work?

While some of the strokes may feel the same as those used in Swedish massage therapy, deep tissue massage isn’t the same as having a regular massage with deep pressure.

It’s used to break up scar tissue and physically break down muscle “knots” or adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) that can disrupt circulation and cause pain, limited range of motion, and inflammation.

At the beginning of the massage, lighter pressure is generally applied to warm up and prep the muscles. Specific techniques are then applied.

Benefits

Deep tissue massage usually focuses on a specific problem, such as chronic muscle pain, injury rehabilitation, and the following conditions:

  • Low back pain
  • Limited mobility
  • Recovery from injuries
  • Muscle tension in the hamstrings, glutes, IT band, legs, quadriceps, rhomboids, upper back
  • Sports concerns (runners, athletes)
  • Tennis elbow
  • Upper back or neck pain

According to Consumer Reports magazine, 34,000 people ranked deep tissue massage more effective in relieving osteoarthritis pain than physical therapy, exercise, prescription medications, chiropractic, acupuncture, diet, glucosamine, and over-the-counter drugs.

Deep tissue massage also received a top ranking for fibromyalgia pain. People often notice an improved range of motion immediately after a deep tissue massage.

Will It Hurt?

At certain points during the massage, you may feel some discomfort or even some pain as the massage therapist works on areas where there are adhesions or scar tissue.

You should always tell your massage therapist if you feel pain during the massage. The therapist can adjust the technique or further prep the tissues if the superficial muscles are tense.

Pain isn’t necessarily good, and it’s not necessarily a sign that the massage is working. In fact, your body may tense up in response to pain, making it harder for the therapist to reach deeper muscles.

What Can I Expect?

After the massage, you may feel some stiffness or soreness, but it should subside within a day or so. Be sure to contact your massage therapist if you have concerns or if you feel pain after having a massage.

Drinking water after the massage may help to flush the metabolic waste from the tissues.

Warnings and Precautions

Deep tissue massage may not be safe for people with blood clots (e.g. thrombophlebitis or deep vein thrombosis), due to the risk that they may become dislodged. If you have blood clots or are at risk of forming blood clots, it’s essential that you consult your doctor first.

If you’ve had recent surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or any other medical procedure, it’s wise to check with your doctor before starting massage therapy. Some people with osteoporosis should avoid the deeper pressure of this type of massage.

Massage should not be done directly over bruises, inflamed or infected skin, skin rashes, unhealed or open wounds, tumors, abdominal hernia, fragile bones, or areas of recent fractures.

If you have any condition, it’s important to consult your primary care provider beforehand to find out what type they recommend. For example, people with certain conditions, such as ankylosing spondylitis, may not be able to tolerate the pain of a deep tissue massage.

Pregnant people should check with their doctors first if they are considering getting a massage. Deep tissue massage (or any strong pressure) should be avoided during pregnancy, but your doctor may suggest a massage therapist trained in pregnancy massage.

Lomi Lomi massage

Lomi lomi is a traditional Hawaiian massage that uses a combination of massage techniques, nut oils, and sometimes elements of prayer, breathing and dance to restore energy and soothe the body. It is also known as the ‘loving hands’ massage. This name helps to explain its principles – the massage works gently yet deeply into the muscles with continuous, flowing strokes, allowing the recipient to relax and give in to the nurturing touch.

Lomi lomi works from the belief that memories are not just stored in the brain and mind, but also in every cell of the human body. The long, continuous strokes of the massage are designed to help the body let go of its old patterns and behaviours, which can cause as many stresses and strains as muscle tension.

‘Lomi lomi’ translates to ‘rub rub’ in Hawaiian, and reflects the broad, flowing strokes made with the therapist’s fingers, thumbs, palms, arms and elbows. Macadamia, palm and coconut oils are usually used as moisturisers in lomi lomi massage, to keep the strokes smooth and to nourish the skin.

What is Lomi lomi massage good for?

Lomi lomi aims to treat the body and mind as one whole being. It is thought to:

  • release tension
  • assist blood and lymph flow
  • eliminate waste and stimulate toxins
  • rejuvenate the body
  • instil a sense of peace, harmony and wellbeing.

In Hawaii, Lomi lomi is used to treat children with upset stomachs and soothe women in labour. A Lomi lomi therapist will not aim to heal themselves, but to be the facilitator for healing – to enable healing to take place.

Before you come

The nature of Lomi lomi means that you probably won’t be able to wear very much, so check with the spa about what you can bring. Bikini bottoms are usually OK.

Please avoid eating heavy meals or drinking alcohol in the hours leading up to your massage.

What to expect from a lomi lomi massage?

Traditionally, Lomi lomi massage is performed with the recipient lying on a hand-woven mat on the floor. However, you are going to find yourself on a conventional massage table. Instead of being covered with towels, you might just have one towel or a small sheet to preserve your modesty. These steps are taken to avoid interrupting the continuous flow of the massage.

Lomi lomi usually begins with a period of stillness between therapist and recipient, sometimes with the therapist’s hands resting lightly on the recipient’s back.

The therapist will work intuitively with your body, with fluid, rhythmic strokes to release and shift tensions. There is no set format for the massage itself, so no two Hawaiian massages are the same. The treatment can be slow and relaxing or faster and more invigorating, depending on how your body responds. You might find that the therapist massages two different parts of your body simultaneously – this is to stop your brain from focusing on any one area and therefore helps to aid relaxation.

Your therapist may make full-body or under-body strokes, lightly stretch your limbs and carefully rotate your joints. These techniques are thought to free up your energy flow, and she will perform them very gently, staying within your comfort zone and level of resistance.

Afterwards

You will feel blissfully relaxed after your Hawaiian massage, and nurtured from top to toe. Make time to wallow in the afterglow, and have a dip in the pool or a leisurely shower before you return to the real world.

Breuss Back Therapy

Unique, highly effective, safe and totally relaxing!

The Breuss Massage the spinal cord is stretched so that the discs can ‘breathe’ again, and regenerate naturally. This gives the back muscles the chance to relax which in turn has a calming influence on the nervous system.

The Breuss method is best suited for rheumatic, organic and musculoskeletal problems, as well as for general wellness.

It was developed by the late Austrian healer Rudolf Breuss who spent 40 years examining the workings of the spine and was widely known for his work as a naturopath.
Rudolf Breuss said that there is no such thing as ‘wear’ if the intervertebral disc but the discs are somewhat ‘degenerated’, and he was convinced that regeneration is possible. Certainly the results achieved with the Breuss Massage suggest that this is quite possible!

Spine is like any other living organism, it is in a constant state of ‘stress and relief’, needs nourishment, rest but also the right amount of ‘stress’ in a sense in the form of active movements to maintain its strength and function. During the day our Spine and especially our ‘discs’ are stressed and they need to fulfill their duty as shock-absorbers whenever we stand , walk or sit. Because of that the discs are squeezed, some of the liquid within gets out and the discs get thinner. We are actually a little shorter in the evening compared to the morning after standing up! During sleep the Spine relaxes and stretches out and the discs somewhat can regenerate by ‘sucking’ the liquid they lost during the day back in, almost like a dry sponge placed in water. This mechanism is altered in a negative way when our metabolism is not in a balance or impaired for many different reasons.

The Breuss Massage is actively replacing in a sense a whole and healthy full night sleep by stretching the Spine and Using natural Oil in the Process the discs are nourished like the sponge given water. In this relaxed state the Spine also can be safely and painlessly re-aligned.

Time required is only about 25 minutes but can easily be longer if you want.

Hot Stone Massage

Hot Stone Massage is used to help you relax and ease tense muscles and damaged soft tissues throughout your body.

During a hot stone massage, smooth, flat, heated stones are placed on specific parts of your body. The stones are made of basalt, a type of volcanic rock that retains heat.

The stones may be placed:

  • along your spine
  • on your stomach
  • on your chest
  • on your face
  • on your palms
  • on your feet and toes

Sometimes, cold stones are also used during a hot stone massage. Cold stones may be used after hot stones to calm any engorged blood vessels and to soothe the skin.

Benefits of hot stone massage:

  1. Helps relieve muscle tension and pain
  2. Reduces stress and anxiety
  3. Promotes sleep
  4. May help relieve symptoms of autoimmune diseases
  5. May help decrease cancer symptoms
  6. May boost immunity

Dorn-Breuss Spinal Therapy

Developed by Dieter Dorn in the 1970’s in the South of Germany, it is now fast becoming the widest used therapy for Back Pain and many Spinal Disorders in Germany.

The Method is based on natural laws of physics and anatomy and combines TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) Principals/Knowledge with Western techniques and principles and has produced great results over many years now. It is a gentle vertebrae and joint treatment. It can be helpful for treating illnesses directly or indirectly connected to the spinal column. It is completely safe but still very effective.

Our skeleton should be symmetrical, harmonic and in a static-dynamic alignment equilibrium. When we ‘upset’ this ‘bone order’ then our joints may be moved out of place especially in the spine.
The results of long-term ‘bone dislocations’ are as diverse as there are names for illnesses today.
When the skeleton is re-aligned people often feel better fast and symptoms of illness can disappear or abate.

The DORN Method is based on the correction of uneven leg length which can be diagnosed in almost every human today. Because of that the pelvis becomes twisted, or the twisted pelvis causes this functional leg length discrepancy, and this often results in an asymmetrical, crooked or displaced spinal column.

School medicine has very little yet complicated explanations for the causes and persons may end up having operations or walk around with special build up shoes or insoles. The Dorn Method proves that we can have the same leg length every day and your body will thank you for that.

The corrections of joint or spinal cord misalignment is always done in a ‘dynamic’, a moving action. Our muscles and especially tensed muscles will always try to hold the positions of the joints and spine and when they are out of order the muscles assumes this ‘wrong’ position as the correct one and hold it there or in some cases even cause the blockage.

A static correction e.g. chiropractic, is difficult since it needs to overcome the strength of the holding muscles and the patient is often quite tense since the treatment is done “on” him and not “with” him.

The Dorn Method uses motion to divert the muscles tension and in this relaxed state it is reasonably easy to realign the bones. The same principle as when getting sand through a sieve, you need to shake (move) the sieve in order to get the sand through it!

Although the therapeutic pressure, which is actually a counter-pressure from the patient side, is encouraging the bones to shift position in the same way it normally does it naturally, the whole functional unit of bones-ligaments-muscles and other tissues is treated at the same time because of the dynamic situation during this treatment.

The Dorn Method can be called a ‘gentle’ Method and NO harm can be done to the patient because the correction pressure is stopped as soon as any (real or intolerable) Pain arises.

Positive results are often immediately achieved and with some easy exercises that the patient does after the treatment, the Dorn Method can bring long lasting relief.

Time required is only about 25 minutes.

Sometimes there are several reactions to be noticed up to several days after the treatment.
Dull muscle pain due to the correction (like after a gym workout) and pressure sensitivity on the corrected areas are common.
Detoxification signs due to an improved metabolism (better nerve function) e.g. flu like symptoms, changes in toilet habits and even an awakening of unsolved inner issues may appear.
These reactions should be judged as a positive healing crisis!
Of course positive reactions like the disappearance of long time pain and chronic inner ailments can be noticed most of the time.

In case of unexpected or severe reactions consult your therapist or doctor!

Aromatherapy Massage

Aromatherapy is a holistic treatment, the aim of which is to produce a physical, spiritual, emotional and mental sense of well-being through inhalation and massage of essential oils. Essential oils are derived from plants and are chosen for their particular therapeutic qualities that are stimulating, refreshing and sedative. Massage is used with the oils to enhance their effectiveness.

Aromatherapy is also referred to as the fragrant art of using socially selected aromatic oils for therapeutic purposes. It is one of the fastest growing complementary therapies in the world and is recognized as one of the most natural and holistic treatments available today.

Essential oils are referred to as the basic materials of the aromatherapist.

They are highly aromatic substances manufactured by plants in special cells. At this stage they are referred to as an essence until they have been extracted by either one of the methods of distillation. They are only then referred to as essential oils. Not all of the oils are referred to as essential oils; it depends on how the oil is extracted.

In the early days man obtained the benefit of these oils by chewing various parts of the plant or tree. Later they made these into teas until they introduced the process of distillation.

Essential oils are obtained from various parts of the plant e.g., bark, flowers, stalks, roots, leaves and resins of trees and plants. Different essential oils are obtained by using different parts of the plant and these will have different therapeutic qualities. Take the orange tree – petitgrain from the leaves and twigs, orange essential oil from the fruit and neroli from the blossom.

IMPORTANT: Particular care should always be taken with pregnancy. Please see notes on contra-indications for each oil.

Some essential oils are not suitable for people with particular health conditions.

Some essential oils are specifically contra-indicated for use with clients who are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, epileptic, asthmatic or suffering from other medical conditions such as cancer.

Clients who are under continuous medical supervision or taking prescribed medication should not use essential oils without the approval of their GP or consultant. Contra-indications must always be followed. The therapist has a responsibility to check for contraindicated oils associated with any conditions the client might have on each and every visit.

Aromatherapy in pregnancy
If the client knows that she is pregnant, aromatherapy treatments should not take place within the first trimester. If the client has a history of miscarriage, aromatherapy treatments are best avoided throughout the entire pregnancy, since it is better to err on the side of caution under these circumstances.

Thai Foot Massage

It originates from over 2000 years ago and actually came from China before making its way to Thailand.

Thai foot massage is meant to stimulate energy channels (Sen lines), leave one feeling balanced, relaxed, and invigorated.

Thai massage is one of the 4 branches of traditional Thai medicinal practice. It involves a healing technique that has been practiced before doctors. Thai massage involves deep tissue and muscle stretching. Thai foot massage is a part of this and the therapy aims to treat energy blockages, relieve aches and pain, paralysis and postural alignment.

According to the theory of the practices of acupuncture and acupressure, there are an outstanding 7,200 sensory nerve endings in each foot which are connected to the internal organs that spread throughout the body.

A Thai foot massage applies pressure to particular areas of the soles of the feet.

Hands, fingers, thumbs, knuckles and a rounded wooden Thai foot massage stick are used to stimulate certain areas of the feet releasing blocked energy within the body’s many Sens lines (Thai-based meridians). This helps to balance and restore a healthy flow of energy throughout the body as well as dispersing a build up of crystals of calcium and uric acid (toxic wastes)……and herein lies the connection with reflexology.

Eastern culture believes that when these energy lines are blocked, disease or illness can manifest and that true health is a state of balance, inner peace, calm and stillness. The focus is on ‘creating’ health with the mind, body and soul are all interconnected.

Benefits you can Expect from a Thai foot massage:

  • Reduces stress
  • Assists relaxation

Indian Head Massage

The traditional art of Indian Head Massage is based on the ancient system of medicine known as Ayurveda, which has been practised in India for thousands of years.

The Ayurvedic approach to health is the balance of body, mind and spirit and the promotion of long life. Ayurveda recommends the use of massage together with diet, herbs, cleansing, yoga, meditation and exercise. The ancient texts say that the human lifespan should be around 100 years and that all those years should be lived in total health, physically and emotionally. The whole aim of Ayurveda is in prevention and with promoting positive health, beauty and long life.

The treatments involve massage and acupressure techniques on the upper back, shoulders, arms, hands and neck. This relaxes tense areas and also helps to re-balance the energy, clearing any areas of negativity.

Indian Head Massage has reportedly many benefits, including:

  • A general feeling of well-being, calmness and deep relaxation.
  • The removal of toxins from tense, knotted muscles into the lymph system, which can then be removed by manual lymph drainage.
  • The stimulation and improvement of circulation and lymph systems
  • Improvement to joint mobility
  • Higher levels of alertness and concentration

It is also said to help relieve the symptoms of:

  • Tension and headaches
  • Eyestrain and general eye problems
  • Tinnitus and other ear problems
  • Insomnia
  • Neck and shoulder stiffness
  • Sinusitis and congestion
  • Hair loss and thinning
  • Scalp tension
  • Mental tiredness, anxiety and stress.

Indian Head Massage can be carried out almost anywhere as it is generally carried out over the recipient’s clothing. It is also a relatively short treatment and benefits can be felt even after a short 20 minute treatment.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Lymphatic massage, sometimes called manual lymphatic drainage, is a specialized type of medical massage. It can help treat lymphedema, in which lymphatic fluid collects in certain areas of the body because it cannot drain away effectively.

Lymphatic massage aims to improve the flow of lymph fluid, which should reduce swelling.

Massaging an area without swelling will make space for fluid to flow to those parts from more congested areas.

The lymphatic system plays a key role in the body’s immune defenses.

Lymphatic fluid flows through lymph vessels, which connect lymph nodes. As it passes through the lymph nodes, white blood cells trap and destroy harmful particles, such as bacteria.

Like blood in the circulatory system, lymphatic fluid is always moving. If it stops, swelling can occur, as lymph fluid builds up, often in the arms or legs. Health experts call this lymphedema.

Who can benefit?

Lymphedema can benefit people who have a buildup of lymphatic fluid:

  • cancer and cancer treatments that involve the removal of lymph nodes
  • filariasis, which is infestation of the lymph nodes by a parasite carried by mosquitoes
  • some types of vascular surgery, such as vein stripping
  • burn scar excision
  • lipectomy, a type of surgery to remove fat from the body
  • infection or trauma in the lymphatic system
  • a buildup of fluid due to deep vein thrombosis
  • health conditions that affect blood flow to the extremities, such as the hands and feet
